About:

With a friendly and straightforward approach and over 40 years knowledge and experience of training, Jim makes sure that both horses and humans are treated properly at Upper Herdswick Farm stables, a wonderful place for both species.  There are all the facilities needed for success, including outstanding, secluded, private grass and all-weather gallops and schooling grounds.

It was here that Jim trained Collier Bay to win the 1996 Champion Hurdle and Irish Champion Hurdle, as well as the previous year's Imperial Cup. He had already gone close to winning both the Triumph Hurdle and Champion Hurdle with Cima, narrowly beaten in 1984, at 66-1, by the great Dawn Run. In 1999 Jim had another Cheltenham Festival success when Sir Talbot won the County Hurdle.

There have been many good horses and winners since, over 550 in all, mainly over jumps but also on the Flat, where Old would like to expand his involvement. In 1992, he won the Group 3 Sagaro Stakes at Ascot with Al Mutahm, in 1997 the Great Metropolitan Handicap at Epsom with Prince Kinsky and, in 2010, the Queen's Prize at Kempton with Gala Evening.

Whether over jumps or on the Flat, Jim has a reputation for getting the best out of his owners' horses while putting their welfare first.
