About:

Ermyn Lodge, situated at the heart of Epsom’s famous training centre and close to the historic downs, has been the site of horseracing stables for at least 70 years, and has housed many famous winners, including the 1971 Grand National hero Specify.

Today, it has been completely refurbished, and for the first time has been given a dual purpose, as a commercial thoroughbred breeding operation that boards mares and prepares foals, yearlings and two-year-olds for the sale.

My wife Lesley and I have been closely involved with racehorses since 1975. We started as small shareholders before going into outright ownership, and then progressed to the breeding side with some of the fillies we raced. We purchased Ermyn Lodge in 2005 and spent three years building a new house, refurbishing the stables, improving the paddocks, preparing separate areas for the breeding operation and acquiring some additional land to allow for the future expansion of this side of the business.

To date the crop of 2008 have been our most successful. The colt KLAMMER out of AYMARA was 2nd to Frankel in the Group 2 Grand Lodge Stakes at Ascot and won the Group 3 Horris Hills Stakes at Newbury. He is currently winning in Hong Kong.

The Filly NOVA HAWK out of REVEUSE DE JOUR was a listed winner in France and was placed in both the English and French 1000 Gns Group 1 and then went on to be 2nd in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes at Ascot.

In recent years we have used the Breeze Up Sales at Kempton to assist our clients in disposing of two year olds and have had 100% success in winners from horses sold there. 2011 was a very frustrating year when we ended up with 30 2nd places mid season, highlighted by 2nd place at Royal Ascot for Ermyn Lodge who went on to 2nd again in the Cesarewitch. However, the year ended with 13 winners!

The old training yard has been completely refurbished since the beginning of 2006, 22 of the 39 boxes look out on to the circular walkway, where the horses get ready to make their way to the outstanding Epsom racecourse gallops. Within the training facility, there are paddocks for relaxation and a horsewalker for extra exercise.

We pride ourselves on having qualified, dedicated staff, led by Pat Phelan, and we call on professional jockeys, such as Ian Mongan and Colin Bolger, when necessary.
