Simon Hodgson is a dual-purpose racehorse trainer based in the beautiful surroundings of Yeovil, Somerset. He maybe new to the training ranks, but not to the industry, possessing 30 years experience, including having ridden winners on the flat & over jumps.
In his younger days Simon spent 7 years as National Hunt jockey to Toby Balding, that came with such pleasures as riding Beech Road & Morley Street. He also spent 6 years as head lad/assistant trainer to Emma Lavelle.
Simon says ”We are a small team, enabling individual attention to our horses – Our main focus is to ensure all horses are happy and enjoy their job. They have a varied work pattern which keeps them stimulated, and with daily turn-out they are able to unwind and relax. “I have learned a lot in my first year as a Trainer, not least the importance of having supportive and patient owners – I am very fortunate to have both and I’d like to thank them all. Here’s to a safe and successful second campaign.“ – Simon.
The horses enjoy a very relaxed atmosphere, with spacious boxes on an open yard and 27 acres of all year turn-out. The covered sand barn provides a safe place for backing youngsters, as well as giving the horses somewhere to have a good roll after exercise. With planning permission now granted, the 2 furlong circular canter track has now been upgraded to an all weather sand & fibre surface.
The 60m x 20m all weather arena which allows us to do flat work, and schooling if the ground in the jumps field is unsuitable. This environment is proving a joy to train in, horses are very happy and could benefit those who have not responded well to bigger yards.
